The UK Soil and Herbage Survey (UKSHS) is a comprehensive survey of the concentrations of major contaminants in soils and herbage across the UK. It provides a reliable baseline against which intensive local surveys and future national surveys can be assessed. For some contaminants, the UKSHS provides us with the first comprehensive picture of their concentrations across the UK. This intercomparison exercise was conducted to demonstrate whether the chemical analytical laboratories and the radio-analytical laboratory involved in this project was performing in a similar manner to other laboratories within the UK. This report discusses the range of concentrations of 13 trace metals and metalloids (arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, manganese, mercury, nickel, platinum, titanium, tin, vanadium and zinc) in soils and herbage from rural, urban and industrial sites across the UK. In all, results for the 13 metals and metalloids are assessed for 122 rural sites, 29 urban sites and 54 industrial sites in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.
