The UK Soil and Herbage Survey (UKSHS) is a comprehensive survey of the concentrations of major contaminants in soils and herbage across the UK. It provides a reliable baseline against which intensive local surveys and future national surveys can be assessed. For some contaminants, the UKSHS provides us with the first comprehensive picture of their concentrations across the UK. This intercomparison exercise was conducted to demonstrate whether the chemical analytical laboratories and the radio-analytical laboratory involved in this project was performing in a similar manner to other laboratories within the UK. Soil and herbage samples collected from rural, urban and industrial sites in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales (n = 203) were analysed for 26 selected PCBs in the largest national survey ever carried out on these persistent organic pollutants (POPs).
