Veterinary medicines and natural steroids are released into the environment from agricultural sources, primarily through excretion from livestock. However, it is not known whether these compounds reach surface waters via run-off from agriculture and whether they subsequently contribute to endocrine disruption in the aquatic environment. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) funded a project to establish whether intensive livestock rearing in the UK may be contributing to oestrogenic and/or androgenic activity in headwater streams.
